exchanged with general john allen. and who is general john allen? he is the top u.s. commander in afghanistan and he is the man who's nominated to be the supreme leader of nato. as you can imagine that, nomination was put on hold in light of all of these allegations. for the record, general allen denies any inappropriate relationship with kelley and these e-mails are described as flirtatious. so reaction to this unfolding and unbelievable drama is coming in from all sides a senior official close to general allen said of jill kelley, she is a nice bored rich socialite. senator dianne feinstein who heads the select intelligence committee that will investigate this whole petraeus affair finds the whole situation very tawdry. >> it's been like peeling an onion. every day another peel comes off. and you see a whole new dimension to this. >> jennifer: of course, conservative republicans like former u.n. ambassador john bolton are frothing at the mustache to politicize the scandal. oh goodness sakes. >> i think we
and top afghanistan commander john allen. the pentagon is now investigating general allen for allegedly sending thousands of inappropriate e-mails to kelley but allen is saying he did nothing wrong and the president and the army are standing by him. >> the president thinks very highly of general allen and his service to his country. as well as the job he has done in afghanistan. >> i believe john allen until somebody proves otherwise i believe that he did nothing inappropriate. >> that was white house spokesman jay carney and former army vice chief of staff peter tee ellie. jill kelley also received threatening letters from paula broadwell. now a 911 call is coming to light of kelley telling dispatchers saying she needed diplomatic protection. as the scandal widens, broadwell is holing herself up in the home of her brother near rock creek park. a jogger found broadwell's lost driver's license in the park and turned into the police. more bill is right after the break. stay with us. we have a big, big hour
deputy director may be nominated. john o 'brennan is also a possibility. investigators are asking for an investigation however how the whole issue has been handled and why it's coming to light now. the chief of the homeland security committee has questions. >> it just doesn't add up that the f.b.i. would be carrying on this type of investigation without bringing it to the president or the highest levels of the white house. >> it doesn't seem to be partisan. senator dianne feinstein in charge of the senate intelligence committee is curious why she found out something like this from media irinquiries and because it could affect national security, pertinent lawmakers should have known in advance. a woman named jane kelly was being harassed by email and brought them into the f.b.i. office. they looked into the emails and found a relationship between broadwell and petraeus. no breach of national security, even though petraeus was advised to resign. we'll be back with more after the break. crazy monday. we'll see you on the other side. ♪ stay tuned for the answer. petraeus sex scandal. general john allen has released some 20 to 30,000 pages of inappropriate e-mails that he exchanged with the tampa temptress, jill kelly. she started the fbi investigation of petraeus in the first place. why are the military generals acting so much like politicians? well, we'll talk about that and all kinds of other issues but first, we get the latest. today's current news update, lisa ferguson's got it out in los angeles. good morning. >> hey bill, good morning everyone. as bill mentioned this petraeus story seems to be getting more complex by the minute. we'll give you more information here because we are continuing to learn more about this whole scandal involving now former c.i.a. director david petraeus and his extramarital affair with the author of his biography paula broadwell. another american is now getting caught up in the whole thing and that is the top commander in afghanistan, general john allen. turns out the pentagon is now investigating him as well for sending inappropriate e-mails

high-ranking military official, commander of the forces in afghanistan, john allen. florida socialite jill kelley complained about harassing e-mails and contacted a friend at the fbi. the account was found to have belonged to paula broadwell. she was given access to david petraeus. locate the was evidence of an affair between petraeus and miss broadwell. the information was leak and petraeus resigned. as more information trickled out, the story got crazier. the harassing e-mails revealed to be not so threatening. the investigation moved forward because of kel little's friendship with the fbi agent she contacted to complain about the e-mails. a friendship that involved the agent's sharing photo of himself. these photos caused the agent to be remove and launched an investigation into his own actions. then this morning and perhaps the otest turn yet reports surfaced of 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails connecting general john allen to kelley. john allen took control of the forces in afghanistan after general
frontrunner to be the next secretary of state. republican senators john mccain and lindsey graham have called rice unthus worthy and unqualified for a promotion for her comments that an anti-muslim video triggered the benghazi attack that skilled four americans. president obama insisted the ambassador was simply making a presentation based on the available intelligence and had tough words for the senators. when they go after the u.n. ambassador apparently because they think she's an easy target, then they've got a problem with me. and should i choose, if i think that she would be the best person to serve america in the capacity at the state department department, then i will nominate here. >> eliot: much more on that a little later in the program. the president also reached out to the g.o.p. on immigration reform and offered an idea that he would like to see from congress. >> obama: whatever process we have needs to make sure that border security's strong, needs to deal with employers effectively, needs to provide a pathway for the undocumented here needs to deal with the dream act kids and

general's left and right. so what does general john allen have to do with this? >> as kelley and general john allen have been linked in an inappropriate relationship with communications. the f.b.i. agent she contacted to kick off the investigation he sent kelly topless photos of himself and went to congress when he felt the agency didn't act fast enough. >> what are these guys doing?% i think the more important question is why do we even know about any of this stuff? why was any of this investigated in the first place? we explain why jill kelly who was asked about these anonymous emails sent to her in the first place, she asked a friend in the f.b.i. to look into it. here's a quote: >> cenk: that's apparently paula broad well sending these messages no one anonymously to jill kelley. where's the threat? where's the crime. why is the f.b.i. literally making a national case out of this. we live in a surveillance state. this is insanity. the source continues: >> cenk: but there's no threats. why is the f.b.i. doing this case which then goes into their most private emails and sex lives and if
